About Ipas: Ipas (located in Chapel Hill, NC) is the only organization working in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America dedicated entirely to ending preventable deaths and disabilities from unsafe abortion. We train health-care providers, work with program managers to improve health-service delivery, conduct research and evaluation aimed at improving abortion-related services and policies, promote appropriate reproductive health technologies, and work with policymakers and advocates to improve health policies and practices. Our reach extends to five continents, with multidisciplinary professional staff based in 14 countries. Through local, national and global partnerships, Ipas works to ensure that women can obtain safe, respectful and comprehensive abortion care, including counseling and family planning to prevent future unintended pregnancies. Senior Research and Evaluation Associate (Africa)
Ipas, a global, non-profit reproductive health organization, seeks a Senior Research and Evaluation (R&E) Associate, Africa, based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, available immediately. The Senior Associate will have responsibility for oversight of a new, significant, multi-year grant for research on abortion in Africa. This position reports to the Vice President, Research and Evaluation.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop strategic direction and annual work plans for the Consortium for Research on Unsafe Abortion in Africa
- Prioritize and develop research projects to facilitate policy and practice change
- Identify and provide technical assistance to research partners in the region
- Conduct abortion-related research, including operations research on service delivery interventions
- Communicate with US and Africa-based partners of the Consortium
- Develop and implement a strategy for dissemination of research findings
- Prepare reports, manuscripts and other dissemination products
- Provide financial and management oversight of the grant
- Contribute to research and evaluation to assess the results of Ipas’s
country programs in Africa and globally
Requirements for the position include:
- Ph.D. or Dr.P.H. in a social science or public health discipline or masters degree in an appropriate discipline
- 10+ years experience in reproductive health research in Africa (with Ph.D.) or 12+ years experience (with masters degree)
- Demonstrated ability in the collection, analysis and presentation of quantitative data
- Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, database and statistical analysis computer packages (SPSS, SAS, STATA)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with a solid publications record in peer-reviewed journals and other venues
- Willingness and ability to travel 25% time annually within the US and internationally
- Ability to work successfully in a cross-cultural, team-based, global environment
- Experience in qualitative research methods desired
- French and/or Portuguese fluency desired

Senior Research and Evaluation Associate (Asia)
Ipas, a global, non-profit reproductive health organization, seeks a Senior Research and Evaluation (R&E) Associate, Asia, based in North Carolina, available immediately. The Senior Associate will have responsibility for research on medical abortion and women's perspectives on abortion, and technical support to Ipas's country programs in Asia and possibly, other regions. This position reports to the R&E Unit Manager.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide R&E backstopping support to Ipas's country programs in Asia and other regions, as needed
- Develop, with local partners, social science research on medical abortion, including women's and providers' knowledge and use of medical abortion and testing approaches to expand the quality and availability of medical abortion services
- Provide technical support in the design and implementation of research to explore women''s knowledge and practices related to unwanted pregnancy and abortion
- Conduct data analysis and reporting of research findings
- Support Ipas's efforts to monitor and evaluate its programs, utilize findings for performance improvements, and share results with stakeholders
- Disseminate R&E findings in local forums, professional conferences, and peer-reviewed journals
- Prepare study protocols and proposals and contribute to donor reports
- Carry out other tasks as needed to support Ipas's R&E efforts
Requirements for the position include:
- Doctorate degree (Ph.D. or Dr.P.H.) in a social science or public health discipline
- 8+ years in reproductive health research, especially in Asia
- Demonstrated ability in the collection, analysis and presentation of both quantitative and qualitative data
- Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, database and statistical analysis computer packages (SPSS, SAS, STATA)
- Experience with qualitative analysis packages (NVivo, ATLAS.ti or others)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and other venues
- Willingness and ability to travel 25% time annually within the US and internationally
- Ability to work successfully in a cross-cultural, team-based, global environment
- Additional language skills desired: Asian languages, Spanish, French, Portuguese
